The present study was undertaken to ascertain commonly-found parasites in gastro-intestinal tract of four male cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascularis) in non-human primate facility. They did not show any clinical signs for 1 year of housing period and were sacrificed at 44-month old for toxicity assessment. The gastro-intestinal tracts including other organs were fixed with 10% neutrial formalin, embedded and hematoxylin-eosin stained for histopathological examination. Balantidium coli (B. coli) was found on the colon and cecum with only mild inflammatory cell infiltration. Morphologically, the cysts of B. coli were 30~4522.5~30 ¥ìm in diameter and were spherical with a heavily ciliated outer surface. These findings indicated that B. coli did not affect any virulence to host and supposedly not show any clinical signs. The findings of the presented study can be used as a basic data for the safety evaluation of new drugs using cynomolgus monkeys.
